Democratic State representative Jay Kaufman introduced a bill
in the Massachusetts' state legislature that would ban all spanking
of children under the age of 18.
When I first heard the wording of the bill I thought how
interesting it would be to see 18 year olds being spanked for all
the crimes committed while growing up. Of course it was a stupid
thought. Then again I was finding it hard to seriously consider such
a proposal by an elected official.
There are some observations that need to be made regarding
such a bill. The first
observation has to do with fact that those who propose such things
obviously are looking at reality from a totally different world
view. The question most God fearing, Bible believing people have
when hearing such things is, how can they be so naive?
Don’t they know that children need this sort of discipline
when they are tempted to run out into traffic or put their hands on
a hot stove or show disrespect to authority?
We think such things because we have a clear grasp on the
human mind seeing as how it is the product of special creation and
that it has been instructed by its Creator.
The humanist sees man as the product of biological evolution
and is nothing more than a living, breathing, chemistry set.
If the chemistry gets out of balance then we can realign it
with drugs or with modified parenting techniques. That’s a fancy way
of saying dope them up on Ritalin and let them have what they want.
Such state sponsored proposals then reflect a world view with the
wrong ideas about humanity.
Another thought which comes to my mind is, who is supposed to
have the best interest of our children at heart?
Sounds to me as though some of our elected officials are
looking down their long noses at the ignorant masses and saying they
will protect our innocent children from their misguided parents. The
idea seems to be that the state has more care and concern for our
little ones than the parents who brought them into the world.
The truth is God has given
children to parents not state legislatures for raising.
The One who made us certainly knows what is best for our
children. He has
ordained the home as the primary source for nurturing and rearing.
He has taught us, “He who spares his rod hates his son, But
he who loves him disciplines him promptly (Prov.
Then there is the concern we all should have of an ever
intrusive government. If the government can tell us how to
discipline our children in the home could they not instruct elders
how to discipline erring members in the church?
When will we rise up and tell Big Brother “enough already”?
“Enough of your usurping the role of parents and their God given
duties”. If we don’t not
wake up we will soon see every freedom and every God given right
taken away by those who are supposed to be the servants of the
people.
Let us pray for those
who would destroy our country.
Especially let us pray for those in authority that we may
lead a quiet and peaceable life and that the gospel might have free
course. But may each of
us consider the direction our country is headed and do more than
pray, let us exercise our right to vote and make our voices heard in
the coming elections. Our children and our children’s children are
counting on us.
